"BRAVE," Jennifer Lopez (Epic)
Jennifer Lopez isn't trying to make much of an artistic statement with her new "Brave." Her sometimes-anonymous voice is dressed up in the studio and decorated with the kinds of arrangements that the mainstream loves. Processed. Dance-oriented. Hook-happy. Beyonce-esque.
So as a commercial endeavor, "Brave" is what it should be. And Christmas isn't that far away.
Lopez, who is co-executive producer and who also pops up as a contributor in the songwriting credits, is a smart businesswoman who looks great, dances well and sings serviceably. Marc Anthony's wife also shows a sense of humor, opening the release with a "Stay Together" that asserts, with exclamation-point lines against a bass rumble, that sticking with a partner is "the new trend" and breaking up is "so clichi." Then she's the coy siren in the swirling electronics of "Forever," singing, "Let's get lost in the moment ... You know you want it."
And maybe you do. For the moment.
A few tracks even have lasting character -- like the dark "Do It Well" (offered in a Ludacris-enhanced remix at "Brave's" end), which rides grainy, suggestive pulsations, and the pretty "Be Mine," which is enveloped in her alluring, insistent vocals.
Lopez also makes a few emotional turns, as with her longing on the percolating "I Need Love" and especially with her poignancy on the gracious title track, oddly offered toward the end of the release rather than frontloaded for greater impact.
It's too bad Lopez didn't put that much of herself into the rest of "Brave," but she's a busy woman. The frothy dance-pop stuff will do.
